Streams In The desert

Romans 4:18-19

[For Abraham, human reason for] hope being gone, hoped in faith that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been promised, So [numberless] shall your descendants be.(A) 19He did not weaken in faith when he considered the [utter] impotence of his own body, which was as good as dead because he was about a hundred years old, or [when he considered] the barrenness of Sarah's [deadened] womb.(B)

Excerpts:

"If you are enduring great afflictions right now, you are at the source of the strongest faith."

"The only way to know strong faith is to endure great trials. I have learned my faith by standing firm through severe testings"

Psalm 56:1-4

Take my side, God—I'm getting kicked around, stomped on every day. Not a day goes by but somebody beats me up; They make it their duty to beat me up. When I get really afraid I come to you in trust. I'm proud to praise God; fearless now, I trust in God. What can mere mortals do?

Psalm 56:3

What time I am afraid, I will have confidence in and put my trust and reliance in You.

Mark 5:36

But overhearing[a] what they said, Jesus said to(A) the ruler of the synagogue, "Do not fear, only believe."

Matthew Henry Commentary Romans 4:18-19

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on the Bible is available in the Public Domain.

He received the promise through the righteousness of faith.

The promise was made to Abraham long before the law. It points at Christ, and it refers to the promise, Ge 12:3. In Thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. The law worketh wrath, by showing that every transgressor is exposed to the Divine displeasure. As God intended to give men a title to the promised blessings, so he appointed it to be by faith, that it might be wholly of grace, to make it sure to all who were of the like precious faith with Abraham, whether Jews or Gentiles, in all ages. The justification and salvation of sinners, the taking to himself the Gentiles who had not been a people, were a gracious calling of things which are not, as though they were; and this giving a being to things that were not, proves the almighty power of God. The nature and power of Abraham's faith are shown. He believed God's testimony, and looked for the performance of his promise, firmly hoping when the case seemed hopeless. It is weakness of faith, that makes a man lie poring on the difficulties in the way of a promise. Abraham took it not for a point that would admit of argument or debate. Unbelief is at the bottom of all our staggerings at God's promises. The strength of faith appeared in its victory over fears. God honors faith; and great faith honors God. It was imputed to him for righteousness. Faith is a grace that of all others gives glory to God. Faith clearly is the instrument by which we receive the righteousness of God, the redemption which is by Christ; and that which is the instrument whereby we take or receive it, cannot be the thing itself, nor can it be the gift thereby taken and received. Abraham's faith did not justify him by its own merit or value, but as giving him a part in Christ. (Ro 4:23-25)

*My Prayer-HIS-THOUGHTS: KimberlyMac Shining 4-Him-Always-4Ever!*

Jesus make me like Abraham. Shape my faith like his. He always believed Your Word, He always looked for the performance of Your Promise through the eyes of huge hope in You. He always clung tighter during the storms of life, firmly clinging to hope! He always dug his roots deep down into Your Infinite Love as Your Sovereign Will brought forth that which he did not understand or could not see. Abraham saw in part but believed in whole; with an undivided heart he hoped huge in the face of hopelessness!

It has been an AWE-GOD afternoon! Just read Isaiah 40:12-17 in the Message Bible! Now that is an AWE developing exercise!

Isaiah 40:12-17

The Creator of All You Can See or Imagine

Who has scooped up the ocean in his two hands, or measured the sky between his thumb and little finger, Who has put all the earth's dirt in one of his baskets, weighed each mountain and hill? Who could ever have told God what to do or taught him his business? What expert would he have gone to for advice, what school would he attend to learn justice? What god do you suppose might have taught him what he knows, showed him how things work? Why, the nations are but a drop in a bucket, a mere smudge on a window. Watch him sweep up the islands like so much dust off the floor! There aren't enough trees in Lebanon nor enough animals in those vast forests to furnish adequate fuel and offerings for his worship. All the nations add up to simply nothing before him— less than nothing is more like it. A minus.
